Abstract

This study aims to draw attention to the potential impact of toxic leadership on educational organizations by examining the theoretical and conceptual dimensions of toxic leadership behaviors that may be exhibited by administrators working in private schools. Toxic leadership is a type of leadership that negatively affects the organizational structure through oppressive, controlling, and harmful attitudes and behaviors. Unlike other leadership styles, toxic leaders prioritize their own interests while disregarding employee well-being and organizational goals. In this leadership approach, the leader is glorified while others are devalued; mistakes are not tolerated, and criticism is silenced. An atmosphere is created in which the leader’s decisions are perceived as always correct, and constant pressure is placed on employees. Toxic leaders foster fear, distrust, and communication breakdowns within the organization. Employees' psychological well-being deteriorates, leading to increased stress, burnout, and a tendency to leave the job. These leaders seek to ensure that success occurs solely under their control, and in the absence of this, they may even attempt to sabotage the process. They do not allow autonomy, keep employees under strict control, and push those who show resistance out of the system. The emergence of toxic leadership is not only influenced by the leader’s personality but also by the attitudes of those around them. A lack of awareness about personal freedom among employees, their acceptance of the leader’s pressure, or failure to resist it may contribute to this process. Moreover, weak institutional structures and lack of oversight create a suitable environment for toxic leadership to flourish. Toxic leaders can manifest in different forms-such as narcissistic, bullying, control-obsessed, or passive-aggressive personalities. What they all have in common is the harm they cause to organizational health. Therefore, in the selection of leaders, not only administrative competence but also human qualities such as adherence to ethical values, empathy, and transparency should be taken into account.
